Hello all,
I have been trying out Skype ( http://www.skype.com/ ) of late, and am
finding it hard to see fault with it. The calls are crystal clear, and
corporate firewalls, NATs and proxies are no object to it whatsoever. It
uses P2P (peer-to-peer) technology - that is, distributed computers on a
network - to relay calls between endpoints with extremely low latency,
providing exceptional immediacy of conversation, and uses 256-bit AES as
the symetric cipher. Does anyone else here use Skype? If so, person-to-
person voice-over-IP chat or conferencing with up to five of us at any one
time will be possible. This will compare favourably with our previous
efforts using SpeakFreely, which were aggrivated by high latency and
mangled UDP traffic passing through different operating system-based
routers. There are a few things you should know, I think. Depending upon
the extent of your zeal and religion, these issues may not be important
enough to warrant consideration. In my belief, Skype Just Works (TM), and
hence should be given serious consideration - not to on grounds of
religious belief seems a bit illogical:
* It runs only on X86 (PC) under Windows or Linux.
* It is closed source, proprietary software.
* Linux users use QT, it is not console.
* It isn't officially supported and certified on Windows 98 or the 9X/ME
family, even though many people are using it there.
So, yeah, check out the site, and let me know what you think. Even though
with my SkypeOut service (the ability to call landlines and mobiles from
your Skype client) the cost to such places as the US is now ridiculously
low, it would be very benefitial if we all used Skype since costs would
then be absolutely nothing.
Cheers,
Sabahattin
